Don’t we all hope for a birthday celebration that has a place in the history books? (um. I guess I’m not an introvert…) Well clear off the tabletops and hop on up for this legendary celebration set. I was inspired by a trip to the Denver Museum of Nature and Science; they are running an exhibit on Mythical creatures. Wicked cool and culturally enriching. And germinated the seeds of an “epic” birthday set….
#truth My never ending love of puns extends to every food experience. Just one trip to my favorite sushi restaurant and these little jokesters started hanging around IG (yep, you can find me at MamaMayerBakery on Instagram). Oh, and it’s been a summer of humorous inspiration. Just you wait.
I have had the pleasure of meeting a LOT of bright and clever people over the years. This young graduate is no exception. Lauren has interned in a hospital already…and that’s before she heads off to a pre-med program at university! Although her biology and chemistry acumen takes a major role of her life, I threw in a few other interests that keep her busy (swimming, being from Buffalo, and graduating) as well. Luckily, Lauren has a kind disposition and is forgiving of my love for word play….
There is a lot of fun banter that goes on via the Instagram feed. So it happened that the fabulous Rebecca Weld, aka the Cookie Architect, off-handedly inquired if a particular set of my cookies had a home. And how she was willing to volunteer hers if not. Those cookies were spoken for but the wheels started turning for a “structurally” sound solution. A dear friend works as a “cheese guru” for Wegmans (utterly fantastic grocery store, for those who do not live in the northeast). As she was approaching a milestone birthday, I wanted to send her something to lighten the mood. You know, to encourage her to BRIE all that she could BRIE. Go a little CRACKERS on her big day….
This past weekend, we were visiting Hilton Head Island, SC – riding our bikes near Coligny Circle. Low and behold, the Aunt Chiladas Tex Mex cafe appears before us like a cookie inspiration from the Cinco de Mayo gods! (Apparently there is a same name/totally different restaurant in AZ and CT too). Meanwhile, I was cookie-fying some book designs for a wedding in August and thought I’d raise the bar to include a literary reference (hmmm. more like belly up to…). And so, I present my take on Cinco de Mayo 2015. May your day be “the whole enchilada!”

No longer in the “empire state of mind”, we’ve adjusted in to a different “state of being,” our Rocky Mountain high… truly, it makes a difference being a mile (plus) above sea level. It has taken me 3 solid months before I could hike the mountains without huffing and puffing. And I don’t mean THAT kind of puffing. But hey, altitude or attitude- you pick.
I have seen quite a few new “stores” that I did not find in New York. Some of them inspired the cookies below. My Colorado cookie recipe has remained the same; no new ingredients have been added. I feel like folks here having the munchies is good enough for my business…. 😉
Who said you can’t play with your food? Apparently, even religious holidays are not “sacred”??? And so it goes for Easter 2015. First an EGGStreme play on that Easter staple: the simple egg. Next I am YOLK-ing around with those wondrous little marshmallow fluffs they call Peeps. Sometimes our ‘peeps just steal the show!?

Happy Pi day my fellow geeks! Twice today, the calendar/time will read 3.14.15 9:26 (am or pm)! A perfect Pi day!! As always, my take on this “epic” Pi day is from a slightly different angle; hope these goes down as easy as pi(e). Oh, and have a relatively happy birthday Albert Einstein.
I confess, I have not read the books nor seen the movie. But the word play from just the TRAILERS alone was enough to CORRAL me into this cookie set. Just HORSIN’ around. Hope I haven’t offended anyone who loves the topic- Shades of Grey or equine…
