This Whole Thing is Rigged!

Um.  Oil rigged, I mean. As in derrick oil rig.  Old fashioned to remind this 80 year old birthday boy of his younger days, running his oil business.

DSC_0648

The event planner’s instructions were specific: a large cookie (yep, that’s a 6″ long cookie) with the rig exactly as he had drawn (the planner is quite the artist himself) on a light blue background.  Oh yes, and Mr. Johnson (the birthday boy) wanted green oil.  (Not that I doubted him but I had to look that one up; it is true that in some places the crude comes out green!)  The 6″ cookie cutter came from the ever.so.helpful Bobbi at Bobbi’s Cookie Cutters.

Step 1: Bake 150 of these HUGE cookies.  Step 2: Flood and let dry over night. Step 3: Paint the background. Step 4: Hand draw (with Rainbow Dust double sided edible markers) the oil rigs. Step 5: Add green oil with second layer of icing.  Did I mention they wanted 150 of them? (The photos only show 100 of them.  The other 50 are on another table…)

Here is my friend, Judy and Ray, the event planner! Thanks for having confidence that I could bring your vision to cookie life!

Tori’s Bridal Shower

So here is a secret that is not such a secret: I love hosting parties!  Love, love, love having kids/folks to the house and all the ruckus and preparation that comes with it.  So when Tori (our eldest) picked a date for her bridal shower, I was jumping for planning joy. Unfortunately, Denver is a bit too far of a commute from Philly so I flew in for an awesome weekend of food tasting, er, I mean, checking out venues for her bridal shower.  Kensington Quarters totally had that rustic industrial feel she was looking for and we couldn’t have been more pleased with the upstairs room, their service, the food, and great atmosphere!

It was a definite given that the favors would be cookies.  Thought Tori would like a little bling like the ring…

OMG1 OMG DSC_0237 DSC_0263 (1)

Since I had to ship things across the country, the prep for the shower could not be too complicated.  Tori’s colors are blush, gold and white so I made a bunch of full sized tassels using instructions through Oh Happy Day! (The tissue paper pack was a set found at Target). I spaced the tassels on simple twine and ran them along the stair railings and the gift table. Thanks Kendra for getting all this set up!

I dipped various sizes of mason jars in gold paint (jars and paint from Target) and sent them to Pure Design Florist  (Pure Design saved my backside because I had quite the time finding a Philly florist that was close enough to the venue to deliver and also open on Memorial day weekend!).

One of the bridesmaids, Jill, is a graphic designer.  She worked her magic to create the templates for the games we played.  I asked her to  1) use the rustic look of wood and lights at Kensington and 2) put a &%$)! load of information on small sheets! The cards were absolutely perfect! Game playing was apparently informative, seasoned with splash of competitiveness; thanks to future Mom-in-law, Johanna, and sister-in-law, Melina, for providing the gift baskets for the lucky winners!

Another bridesmaid, Joan, brought bunches of balloons, decorated with witty words.  I’m a sucker for clever words appropriately placed.

DSC_0298 DSC_0554We brought Byron upstairs for the latter part of the shower.  The almost.bride.and.groom got mini white boards (thank you once again Target) to play our version of “the newlywed game”!  POSITIVELY HYSTERICAL! SO MUCH FUN! (Google ‘newlywed game questions’ or ‘newlywed game questions bridal shower’ and you will get more ideas than you would ever need).  I typed out many questions and the bridesmaids took turns picking a question to ask.

Tori likes clean lined, structured designs with just a kiss of bling.  So we got this cake from the wonderful Whipped Bakeshop in Fishtown. Not only was the cake delicious and beautiful, Whipped Bakeshop was super wonderful to work with.  The topper came from Communicakeit.  I fell in love with it as soon I saw it on Instagram; it had just the right words and shine for the occasion!

Thank you to all of the bridemaids and Johanna for such a successful bridal shower! Your help and collaboration made things run smooth as silk! …. sorry Melina isn’t in this picture 😦

Flip Side

Okay.  This birthday girl is one of the most adorable ever, full of personality and charm.  Her mom wanted something sweet and age appropriate for her gymnastics themed party.  Both boys and girls would be attending the celebration so I included a cartwheel guy too.  The little girl designs were purchased through sweet Preciosa Barbaran’s Etsy shop, 1EverythingNice.

Background stencils came from The Cookie Countess and Killer Zebras. This gold was Wilton’s gold mist (found at WalMart or Michael’s).

Pardon my French

This set was made for a French teacher who is welcoming a little girl into their lives.  The client wanted some french words; as I do not know French and sometimes question my English, I hope I got it right.  The struggle is real.

Bunnies

Not sure of what cookie favors to take into school for her daughter’s birthday, the client sent me several photos of her incredibly adorable six year old for inspiration. One of the photos showed her hugging her favorite stuffed animal bunny.  Bunny bonanza!  I sketched the idea, passed it by my customer, and was good to go.  The bunny cutter was from the MeriMeri 2015 Easter collection.  I happened to have a small carrot from R&M Internationla Corp‘s mini veggie cutter set that went perfectly for the look of the favor I was trying to achieve.  I am still giggling about the carrot bow tie I gave him…

I also made 5 folk bunnies for the family to just eat at home (they are amazing and I love my repeat customers!). Playing up the texture…

Bookmarked

Carrie and Elizabeth are true book enthusiasts and for their wedding they wanted to create a favor that had that “snuggle.up.with.a.cup.of.joe.and.a.good.read” vibe.  The couple had already found some mugs they liked so I wanted to create cookies that would fit into the cup.  I thought some nice bookmarks would be clever and asked them to pick a few of their favorite books. I also included one book shaped cookie because I just couldn’t pass up the ‘chapter/page turner’ word play…  Here’s the result:bookmarks

A Hunk, A Hunk of Burning Love

Okay.  So it’s actually “a hunk,” “a hunk,” AND burning “love.” Should have made them peanut butter flavor for the King.  No matter. Elvis has left the building. Special thanks to the great Callye Alvarado (the Sweet Adventures of Sugarbelle) for the original tutorial and hunky torso idea!

Stick It.

I try to come up with new and fun ways to approach birthday party cookies.  What better time to put a cookie on a stick (well, heavy paper straw to be exact) than when asked to coordinate with a Lacrosse theme?  I created a “field” by cutting out styrofoam sheets to fit in a cake box, covering them with simple construction paper (totally not to scale but I was limited by box size).  I then baked the 20 stick heads, based coated the first side white, and let dry overnight; I used the double sided Rainbow Dust pens to ink in the outline and associated netting.

DSC_0128

okay- it’s winter.  Everything starts looking like snowflakes.

I flipped the heads over and used thick royal icing to set the straw on the back side of the cookie.

DSC_0137

After an hour or so, I coated the second side with 10 second icing. I toyed around with inking in the nets on the back  as well but 1) decided it looked cleaner without, and 2) decided these were labor intensive enough already. I also made a net cookie for either end of the field.

Take home favors were also requested- jerseys out of a chocolate cookie.  Just a simple hand painted and stamped jersey with a few penned in accents.

Me, My Elf, and I

I have been making place cards for a friend’s Christmas Eve dinner for many years. Santa’s helpers were happy to help, taking a break after working so hard all year long. Hope your holiday meal is a very merry one.
