NYC to Denver

At one time, they all lived in the same apartment building in the Big Apple. Now the family that has since moved to Denver and wants to entice the other families to do the same. Below is the “cookie postcard” illustrating what Denver has to offer (some adult content, they wanted to include a few of the high life…).

You’ve Got to be Kidneying Me

A very brave and wonderful woman is donating a kidney. I am hoping that a little humor will help ease the stress of the surgery. Now a resident of Denver, she is originally from Boston so that needed to be incorporated into the set.  Kidneys, the Mama Mayer way.

Here Ye, Beer Ye

ALE yeah, turning 21 is reason to celebrate.  And in the US, adulthood means you can legally raise a glass.  In honor of Denver’s craft brewing industry and those whose HOP(e)S and dreams are set by beer, I present two of my best BREW.ha.ha cookie sets.

Swole Mates

Oh no I didn’t.  Yes WHEY, I did! This order was for a newly married couple who met at the gym and were both into power lifting. The client gave me free rein with design and so I LUNGED into the puns.  Never been so dead (lift) serious in my life.

GOURDgeous

Let’s talk about mistakes. I work incredibly hard not to make them. But I did. In my haste (4 different sets were on our dining room table that day) to get a friend her birthday cookies on time, I totally misspelled a play on words.  No pun pride that day.  Luckily, it was a dear friend and I gave them to her anyway.  She said she didn’t even notice (that’s how good a friend she is).  Despite my spelling fail, the gourds in the set turned out beautifully and the pun was perfect for the season.  And, here’s the most important part, the cookies are always tasty.

Bottom line, I just want to pass along a hug to those of you who like things just so, who strive for perfection.  It’s frustrating when things don’t go according to plan but mostly it’s US that care so deeply about perceived imperfection.  Others, not so much.  Here’s to continuing on. May the rest your day still be GOURDeous.

Skeleton Keys

Another play on words??? So shocking.  Let me know if you are getting tired of them. Apparently I never do.  And I am kinda pleased with the random mermaid skeleton.   Do I even have to say that my mind works in weird ways???

Halloween GoBo 2016

Dear Halloween:  I get it.  You’re spooky. All that creaking and moaning is very expressive.  But I am just not that into the scary vibe.  I’d rather flaunt my haunt with a flavor of fun. Turning word play possibilities into probabilities. Hope we can still be friends.  My best, MMB

Here are the cookies that went out to the GoBoBakeSale this year (fundraiser for ALS).

Bye Bye Bye

How can you be incredibly, at the deepest darkest depths, sad and yet excited at the same time? Well, Megan is one of my favorite Zumba instructors (and I AM PICKY about my instructors!); this very same Megan decided to adventure in Spain! As in a permanent move!!! So excited for her.  So sad for us.  This was the platter I made for her before she left.  Puns included.  As always.  Hope you’re loving life over there, Megan! Miss you!

Geek is the new Chic

I am so happy for Katherine- that she is graduating from high school and heading to Pitt to study neuroscience.  But, dang, she is the youngest of the swim kids with whom our children hung out! All this growing up is happening!  An era of chlorine is over (I mean, even Michael Phelps is retired now). Yikes!

In any case, it was one last graduation set to make.  I made two platters: one focused on the nerdy inclinations and the other on her future university, Pitt.

For the Geek inside us all (okay, maybe not ALL of us), I focused on some biological responses.  #nerdsrule #chemistryiseverywhere  Those stamped clever/nerdy sayings came from pencils I bought from Newton and the Apple.

But my favorite was the Myelin sheath dress.  (I try to come up with my own clever creations whenever possible.  I think this is another Mama Mayer original.)

Lastly, here are a couple of close ups for the Pitt cookies. I have a thing for puffy cookies….

Breakfast of Champions

2016 Fathers Day set #2.  Although this set could be for anyone who has been supportive! These particular cookies were for a guy that LOVES his breakfasts. Has been known to have breakfast for dinner or snacks some days. And, perhaps more notably, he is the MOST wonderful dad (okay, truth in lending, my hubby is the inspiration for these). He has been so supportive of our two girls and has doled out some hysterical and on point advice…unlike their mother, he gives it only when asked!).  We are incredibly fortunate!

To make the waffle, I started with a square cookie and iced a square grid as shown below. While I let the grid dry, I made the egg, butter pat, and bacon on a separate piece of acetate (or use parchment paper) and let that sit overnight.  Next, I thinned down a small batch of ivory tinted royal icing to a very runny consistency and poured that over the square cookie, letting excess run off. As that set up, I made the ‘syrup’ icing and peeled off the egg, etc transfers. I painted on some dimension to the small squares within the waffle and let that dry.  Then I semi-poured, semi-helped (with a paint brush) the syrup icing to flow where i wanted it.  Added the transfers and stamped the words. Quite happy with how the waffle turned out.  The bacon needs work.
