Auto.matic Love

It’s always about the story… Long ago, the parents vacationed in Italy and got to tour the Ferrari auto factory.  As they heard the whole story, they fell in love with the name Enzo.  Two lovely little girls later, along comes their beloved Enzo… aaaand the car and driver themed baby cookie set. I hope Enzo Ferrari would be proud.

PS:  Everyone should learn how to drive a manual transmission.  So much fun.  Really, really.  DSC_0661

Just what the Doctor Ordered

I always ask for the story behind the request for cookies.  In this case, there was a surprise health incident and a friend wanted to send some cookies to speed along the healing process.

Um. Positivity.  It’s all in the attitude.

They say laughter is the best medicine so I went with that.  Visited our medicine cabinet and came back with the idea for the gel caps and a ‘script pad.

Whether in sickness or in health, I believe surrounding oneself with family and good friends is the path to a long happy life.

Far away Friends

We’ve lived from sea to shining sea in this wonderful country of ours, moving 7 times in 19 years. Keeping up with our ever-changing address/phone #s requires perseverance and dedication; we are incredibly lucky to have met many WONDERFUL friends that do just that.  It is not easy to maintain daily life and keep in touch, unfortunately.  So, as the summertime picnic season has arrived, I thought this little reminder sent to my far.flung friends would let them know that I am thinking of them in my own “sweet” way.  The cookies were individually wrapped and placed in an old fashioned plastic picnic basket before being boxed up!

Remember this memorial day/bbq season to practice safe picnic habits and always use a condiment.  …too racy to put on a cookie?  …..?

WTF Party

So, one might ask, what IS a wtf party?  I personally can imagine several scenarios for such an occasion.  None of them were what really precipitated this party.

So a few ladies from the area decided that they and their senior.in.high.school children should have one last hurrah and go away together during spring break.  They were happily enjoying themselves in the bright southern sunshine . Until. Until one of the moms had a life threatening health issue.  It was literally and figuratively heart stopping (over and over again).  She couldn’t even get on the plane to go home to her own doctor.  Surgery had to be performed in the state where she vacationed. Immediately.  This young mom had no previous health concerns, no family history of issues.  Holy beep balls.  Good news is that, after several weeks away, she has returned home. Friends were wanting to celebrate her improved health.  And basically say “WHAT THE….”  How does this happen out of the blue?  Life sure has a way of surprising us.

The only marching orders my gentile client gave me (while apologizing for the theme- not necessary. totally understandable.) was to make pink hearts with a them of  ‘wtf.’ Consider it done.

Junior Prom

Many high schools have one prom where both juniors and seniors can invite guests.  But at Williamsville East, they keep them separate- calling the junior prom “JDD” or junior dinner dance. The school colors are red and yellow with a mascot of a “flame.”  Since there are 3 high schools in the district- north, east and south (not terrifically original but actually quite helpful in understanding their location within the district boundaries), East goes by the letter “e”.  Now you know why there is a flaming “e”…

The box step has particular sentimental meaning to me.  When our eldest was still quite little, my husband taught her how to do the box step.  I can still picture it: her feet on top of Pete’s, arm in arm, walking and talking through the motions.  They giggled and swirled and made exquisite memories.  Tori will always be a papa’s girl.  She loves that man.  Rightfully so.  This cookie is homage to the simple but sweet footwork of the box step.

Shakespeariment

“To be or not to be” entranced by the wit and prose of Shakespeare?  The Bard certainly affected the English language.  More than most people might guess, actually.  These cookies were made in honor of some of the phrases which he penned that live on in our everyday vocabulary.  Thanks Will.

These particular parchments were made for cast members from Williamsville East High School Shakespeariment Club; this year they performed their own interpretation of the comedy Twelfth Night.

Mother’s Day 2014

2014 mother’s day sets: one with sass and one with sentiment.

DSC_0665 DSC_0650

…what every mom wants to hear on Mother’s day – not even remotely possible during teenage years, more likely when “children” become parents.   Go call your mom/mum/mommy/mother this Sunday.  Maybe other days too.

Mixing It Up

The bridal shower invitation showcased a mixer with a electric green background, the theme being all things kitchen. So I “whipped up” 10 dozen KitchenAid mixers for the favors.  Each cookie was about 3.5 x 3.5″ and she wanted the traditional shortbread flavor.

DSC_0668

DSC_0646I used luster dust and almond extract (though vodka or and clear extract will do- flavors barely are noticeable if at all) to paint the mixing bowl and strip and used an edible ink marker to outline the cookie.

This is what 120 cookies look like.

Bagged and tagged.  And Patty wanted 10 on a plate too.  Assuming that was for her own enjoyment 🙂

Lady Liberty is Pitch Slapped

If you’d like to hear a great a cappella group, boy do I have a link for you!  PITCH SLAPPED represents Berklee College of Music (Boston) and man do they REPRESENT!!!  I had the good fortune to hear their performance this last weekend at the ICCA finals in NYC.  300 teams competed (USA and abroad) and it came down to the final 8 teams on Saturday night.  There were some incredible performances, both in vocals and in choreography- but, at the end of the judging, Pitch Slapped was declared the 2014 winner.  They were really, really ah.mazing.  Talented, poised, and humble.  What a team! I made these cookies to wish them well in the competition.  Good luck charms, if I say so myself. DSC_0649 photo 1 photo 5

“Be In Good Spirits” on your Birthday

When you turn 50, all bets are off.  You can ‘whine a little, WINE a lot!’  Milestone birthdays often bring around self medication in this socially acceptable form. Um.  Maybe any birthday???  So, here is my ode to said alcoholic category;  they may not all be considered “spirits” but they are all libations of a sort.  Happy 50th Akemi!  May your second half of the century be even better.
