Succulent

Oh succulent.  Adjective v. noun.  Dessert v. desert…. A prickly topic to be sure.  Hopefully you think it is a win-win!

These cookies started out with a basic white coating, including some dimension.  The shapes were hand drawn on to card stock and then cut out of dough by tracing those shapes with a knife.

To get the sandy effect, I used a microplane/zester to gently trim up the sides (or spare cookie scraps); these trimmings were later sprinkled over the still wet icing of the base cookie. Thank you Rebecca Weld aka TheCookieArchitect for this “fitting” tip.  I ‘zested’ each cactus until perfectly flat on the bottom, so they could stand without the aid of icing/support on the base cookie.

After the cacti were painted and dried, I used stiff royal icing (colored with ivory and a dash of egg yellow) and a butter knife to coat the long base cookie.  The cactus were quickly set in place and sprinkled with the “sand.”

I did place toothpicks behind the cactus for support (but they stood on their own without).  I had to transport them upright and I didn’t know if I needed that assurance…

The Cactus flower is also edible.  I painted some edible wafer paper yellow, let that dry, & then cut a continuous inward circle  (tons of how-tos on the web).  Little dabs of water made the edges stick together as I wound it into a flower.

Party Animal

I have a confession. Our eldest turned 25 this week.  Holy time passage!  Look away for a moment and our babies are adults!  Tori has found that lovely balance between working hard and keeping things playful and in perspective.  But, um, the girl does know how to rock a celebration.  With that in mind, I give you her ‘party animal’ birthday set. Hope all your birthday wishes come true, Tori!

Let Them Eat Cake!

Well, sort of.  Cake is awesome but I am much better at baking cookies.  So when a friend’s kiddo wanted to take treats in to school for her 10th birthday, the phrase ‘let them have cake and eat it too’ came to mind. Hopefully no (french) revolution will follow…

Auto.matic Love

It’s always about the story… Long ago, the parents vacationed in Italy and got to tour the Ferrari auto factory.  As they heard the whole story, they fell in love with the name Enzo.  Two lovely little girls later, along comes their beloved Enzo… aaaand the car and driver themed baby cookie set. I hope Enzo Ferrari would be proud.

Junior Prom

Many high schools have one prom where both juniors and seniors can invite guests.  But at Williamsville East, they keep them separate- calling the junior prom “JDD” or junior dinner dance. The school colors are red and yellow with a mascot of a “flame.”  Since there are 3 high schools in the district- north, east and south (not terrifically original but actually quite helpful in understanding their location within the district boundaries), East goes by the letter “e”.  Now you know why there is a flaming “e”…

The box step has particular sentimental meaning to me.  When our eldest was still quite little, my husband taught her how to do the box step.  I can still picture it: her feet on top of Pete’s, arm in arm, walking and talking through the motions.  They giggled and swirled and made exquisite memories.  Tori will always be a papa’s girl.  She loves that man.  Rightfully so.  This cookie is homage to the simple but sweet footwork of the box step.

Ode to Polar Vortex

We’ve had our fair share of Buffalo snow and wind over the years but this storm was particularly blustery and bitter!  For those of you who know the area, I 90 was closed from Rochester through the PA border.  Although we were sequestered in our home, we had electricity, heat, and one perfectly delightful fireplace!  I had been wanting to try the dark chocolate cookie recipe from Sweetapolita so ta-da, silver lining for everything.  (thank you Sweetopolita! Delish!)  Here are the results.

Basically I wanted to do a study in 2x4s.  Most might think Lowe’s lumber, but I mean 2 inch by 4 inch, as in cookie terms.  I started with a 4″x4″ cookie and cut in half.DSC_0554

Then I made the earmuffs using a horseshoe and a ruffled circle cookie cutter.mixing cutters

Ugly Sweater cookies

Um.  Such a party!  One person had an Ipad playing either a roaring fireplace or Happy Feet built into his sweater.  Another had “Madonna cones,” appropriately placed.  There were flashing lights, fur, and balls hung with care (ornaments, I mean).  And, of course, cookies.
